I do not have the entire consititution memorized in fact the exception clause is one of the only ones I know of the top of my head. You know why? Because it’s a very significant clause. It states that “there shall be no slavery except as a punishment for crime” thus opening the loophole that led to the creation of Black codes and vagrancy laws where it was illegal to be black and unemployed. That one line is now responsible for the humanitarian crisis that is the US industrial prison complex.
