It really depends on ur school. My school requires u to have at least 15 credits before u can be an RA (though u can’t really apply for spring ur freshman year anyway). My tip would be to ask questions and rely on returning RAs in ur group for help if ur ever lost bc it can be really overwhelming especially if u have a lot of residents
My school allows it for sophomores. I’d say def if you know any RAs talk to them about the pros and cons of your school specifically and get an idea for what your school expects/is looking for (if you scroll through this page a bit you’ll see that every school runs housing differently so you wanna go into it eyes open just bc we say something doesn’t mean it’ll be the case for your school).
Literally just be normal and come off as a people person. Highlight communication skills in the interview. My boss loves me bc I’m one of the few RAs who actually talks to my residents. I know what’s going on with them, I know if they’re struggling in a class, I offer them campus resources 🤷🏻♀️ and I tell them as long as I don’t see, hear, or smell anything sus there won’t be an issue. I’m not a cop or your mom, but I am someone you can talk to
Also if your school has special interest housing and your background fits for that then bring it up (like honors or major-specific housing or for any special programs your school has). You aren’t guaranteed to work in that community but it might get your application accepted. If you’re like die hard I want a certain area maybe get to know the supervisor for that spot bc at least at my school they have the biggest say in where you’re placed
