I’m going to be an RA next year. For all the RAs this year what is the best advice you have?

Covering shifts for people will not guarantee your coworkers to do you a favor. Don’t go out of your way for people who would never do the same for you

Know your coworkers. Some will always be there for you and those are the people you cover for!

Try to figure out early what type of RA is required. Some places you can be the chill RA but others that just isn’t doable and you’ll need to be stricter

Keep track of deadlines and do everything asap. Don’t internalize everything that happens in your dorm. Don’t take reslife so serious, it’s just a job.

Schoolwork comes first, make sure to put effort into the job but you aren’t expected to go above and beyond

Sometimes, there are just some coworkers who are jerks and for some reason the head staff loves them. Do your best to be civil and kind, and never try to retaliate. It will bite you in the butt (I saw it happen with a staff member who I really liked)

The resident’s and your peers picture of you can be a very distorted and one-sided picture of who you are. Don’t take what they say to and about you to heart. People can be really mean. I would say I was a pretty laid back RA but I just was told by my bosses to search certain rooms (due to photos I submitted to their office) and those people started things when they got wind that I was involved.

I was a new RA this past semester and I kinda let ppl get into my head. Just remind urself that school and ur social life comes first and don’t let this job consume ur entire life. Plus don’t put too much pressure on urself to be perfect right away coz ur still gonna be learning throughout ur first semester in the position. Just keep track of everything ur required to do as an RA and make sure u space things out and not cram everything in last minute

another thing is make sure to set ur boundaries right away so ur residents respect u as a person and dont think they can just intrude on ur space at any time and make u their 24/7 helper. I had a tough time with some difficult residents this semester and since I kinda came in halfway through the year I never really got to properly set my boundaries with my residents since the floor was kinda already established by the previous RA on my floor. Also try to make friends with the other RAs in ur

Group so u have other ppl to turn to if u don’t unsure of how to do something. The first semester is always a learning curve and just remind urself that u don’t have to be perfect right away and it’s fine to make mistakes

When your off duty your off duty. Higher ups might tell you that you are always on duty but you are not. You’re not paid enough to be on duty 24/7.
