1. Don’t feel like you can’t come to vet RAs for assistance. No question is a dumb question!!! 2. Start thinking of your door decs, bb ideas, or social ideas (you can find them easily on Pinterest) 3. Don’t try to be best friends with your residents. You can still be cool with them while prioritizing your position. I promise you if you let a resident get away with something, if they’re caught, they’re blaming you. So don’t risk your job for them. Do your job and build bonds!

Training is prob gonna be an info overload and tbh might suck. Do your best to pay attention and get what you can from it! You will prob still be asking tons of questions (and that is totally great, like 1 said the vets are happy to help!) but training will help you get the basics and make starting out a lot easier

Being an RA is very rewarding and that's what reslife will tell you. Prioritize yourself when needed. In regards to residents set boundaries. It’s completely ok to say “no”. Yes certain things are your job but you're also a human being with needs and priorities. Also, if your unsure just ask. Be safe than sorry. Congrats and good luck.

Welcome!! I was nervous as hell my first year but I did door knocks and gave out treats to the ones that communicated with me!

My RA this past semester literally never talked to us or held good events and she was just weird. Hopefully I’ll be able to connect more than she did to my residents

Omg, I literally went through the same thing! That’s what drove me to become a RA to make sure my residents felt seen and heard! You’ll do great don’t get psyched out!!

Also, this might sound bad but there is such a thing as too much empathy. You need to be able to walk away after a call is over without dwelling on it. Idk what your school does or does not have you handle, but mine has us respond to some pretty difficult situations. If you get that, lean on your staff and make sure you are taking care of yourself. Yes show empathy but also please protect your mental health
