At my school, you don’t have to answer knocks from residents. They can message you directly or, if it requires immediate attention, call the on-call phone. Personally, I try answer every time residents knock unless I’m in bed.

I had a clip on my door that I could move to “do not knock unless it is an emergency” which I usually used when I was studying for finals, but I did have a resident knock while I was making out with a guy once and I just didn’t answer… that’s what the RA on call is for. And if they need something they can knock and respect my privacy. We’re all adults.

if you aren’t on call you have no requirement to open the door to them. keep ur boundaries!
