my roommate brought gnats into the room with these nasty ass plants, and has thoroughly refused to clean much in general. i made her get rid of the plants but since we’re already dealing with a mold issue in the bathroom (school issue), it’s going to suck

I own plants and have dealt with both gnats and fungal issues. Both are the easiest problems to fix. The fact that she wouldn’t do basic plant maintenance is ridiculous to me.

the plants themselves caused issues since the beginning. she brought them into our dorm (so an entirely shared space with no privacy or door to isolate the issue) and made it smell like manure for a week, then continued to not take care them properly which then led to the gnats. before that, the soil gave us both intense headaches and overall gross feelings and she still refused to change anything. i finally got them out last night but it’s a never ending issue with her

Either the plants had manure mixed in their soil (which you’re not supposed to do BECAUSE of the smell) or the plants had root rot before even being bought. Sounds like most of the issues would’ve been prevented with a basic soil change and some root trimming. She was basically refusing to do 5-10 minutes of basic plant maintenance depending on the number of plants. Some people are meant to only have fake plants.

which is exactly what i said to her!! i noticed a while ago that the plant that was attracting the bugs was a concerning green and falling all the time so i was contended about root rot. she said the manure was already mixed in but i logically could not see why anyone would do that unless you add it in yourself

What are these plants? I don’t know ANY commercial nursery that puts manure in their indoor plants. Or outdoors plants for that matter manure is expensive.

They could be someone’s small business, but Ivy can also be an outdoor plant so it’s possible these were meant to be outdoor plants, hence the manure in the blend. It’s also a possibility that the reason they were being given away at a school event was because of their poor state.

possibly. i knew they were outdoor plants so i asked why she even tried to bring them indoors because they weren’t in an environment where they would thrive, and she just said that she wanted them. as for the state in which they were given away, i was not present when she got them so i knew nothing of what was happening at the event. all i was told was that there were plants in the room and that it smelled so not to be surprised when i got back from hanging out with my boyfriend

It sounds like the school event organizers were in the wrong to hand out outdoor plants to students that would largely only have indoor spaces to keep them and your roommate was wrong for not learning ANYTHING about the plants she wanted and choosing to let them rot instead of basic care.
