lol I used to do this once my roommates started acting like they didnāt like me because I didnāt spend time with them in the common area and was mostly in my room like idek what to doš I tried talking to them and they would either ignore me or give me bland answers like they didnāt want to talk to me
There is no obligation for them to be friends or talk with you. Sure it would be nice or convenient. And on their end, if they donāt want to and have the benefits (healthy) of a friendly roommate, then thatās on them. If theyāre not hygenic or messy, or doing things against whatever actual policy, speak up about it. Source: living with people in the military
My former roommates ignored me for literally no reason then blamed it on āincompatibilitiesā when they borderline making out with eachother and I couldnāt break that ābest friendā dynamic. Then they kicked me out when over half the summer was over because they found someone ābetterā than me. So for you case they either could just be quiet people, or they are planning a scene against you to kick you out
Speaking as someone who was and is still lowkey like this OP, I think itās just shyness and not knowing someone or how they will react to what you say, so you just donāt feel comfortable saying something first. Usually I will say āheyā to you if you say it first. So maybe theyāre not someone to start a conversation and you have to be the one to initiate it. Although, I like that I got to see someone elseās perspective of my shyness, cause I never thought it made people feel that way.
They might not be suitable for roommates but had to for one reason or another. Sometimes I forget to acknowledge people, so I live alone now. I mean thereās other reasons too, but Iām autistic and forget small talk is expected. When I got accommodations my doctors literally included that I would be too off putting to a roommate
Have you tired actually talking to them? Or are you just on here expecting them to make the first move? Itās one thing if theyāre not talking to you and another if theyāre actively ignoring you when you do speak to them. Iām guessing itās not the latter so why donāt you try talking to them or try leaving notes to get them to open up. If they still donāt talk to you then just accept that and move on.
I mean if youāre living with each other you will be acquainted with them. But that doesnāt mean you always have to say hello and bye, and force conversation. Itās not awkward to coexist silently. Ppl just think itās awkward bc theyāre not comfortable w silence. Friendships should happen naturally, you shouldnāt have to force it.
I can kind of understand where you're coming from, but you dont have to be friends with someone to at least have some type of connection that is somewhat comfortable especially considering it's so easy to look at each other like strangers.. dorms are small and being in a room with someone you don't even talk to is just weird, I'm not saying to constantly force a friendship, people can have acquaintances that they don't deeply connect with and still feel at least more comfortable around
I agree with you. I lived with 3 girls I was extremely quiet. I was 17 at the time. I would say hi no matter what. They still thought I was too quiet and got mad at me. ā you donāt even want to smoke with us or party. You hate usā I straight up told them that I struggled with social anxiety and I was kicked out a week ago and I had a hard time in general. They always thought about themselves. I stated I did like them. We donāt have to follow what other people want us to do.
I wasnāt saying you have to. But actually acknowledging me would be nice that way I feel like iām actually welcome. No one said āyou have to do thisā āyou have to say thisā āyou have to be like thisā I donāt mind if theyāre quiet and introvert. But theres a difference between being introvert and just completely ignoring someone
The difference is that you actually say hi, Iām saying my roommates donāt. I have nothing against them and all I was saying was that just saying hi is already enough, I donāt mind if you donāt like talking which is fine but just a simple smile or smirk is more than enough
I totally get that, in my comment I was only specifically talking about a simple hi or smile. A simple smile or smirk is more than enough. They havent said a word to me ever since the first move in day. All I was saying was just acknowledging that Iām also here too is more than enough
Shyness is not something to be overlooked at. I completely understand if people are more nervous than others and if youāre not comfortable with small talk. In my comment I was mostly just stating that acknowledging me, like giving even a little smile, is more than enough to let me know that youāre fine being here. Iām not going to rush anyone to do something they donāt want to do. I use to be shy also but thereās a difference between being shy and ignoring someone.
Firstly I didnāt mean to sound rude while explaining. I never said I wanted them to make the first move. Iāve tried talking to them, Iāve asked questions, Iāve introduced myself and I say hi all the time. There was no need to be rude about it. Maybe some parts of my explaining may sound harsh but I promise I donāt mean any harm. I was just asking others if their roommates are the same.
Well there you go then, youāve talked and they havenāt said much. When you ranted about it your original comment it comes off as if your roommate was purposefully ignoring you, and you wanted others to agree; thus the next action would be to see if itās ignorance or just plain avoidance/shyness. At the end of the day youāre living with this person and if youāre fine with how they operate with you, then I donāt see any point in keep replying to others and trying to defend yourself.
Yeah I was clearly just asking if other roommates were the same. And Iām also not trying to ādefendā myself but Iām just giving a more detailed explanation on my roommates and how theyre quiet. And since you do see me replying I said in one comment that they shut the door in my face when I asked a question. To me it really odd not really rude but just odd.
