My dad had to go to India for work and I was explain how it kinda makes me sad and just nervous for him overall and my roommate went “ya I get it my mom is going to Arkansas”….girly pop, that’s still in the US and it’s barely half way across the country

i don’t think this is a “poor attempt to sympathize”; if your roommate’s mom is a plane ride away, yall are in the same boat just because her mom is geographically closer doesn’t mean that she can’t miss her, plus your roommate might have other obstacles preventing her from visiting her (e.g. financial difficulties) if she said her mom was a 30 min drive away, i’d understand your frustration but once you reach a certain threshold it’s all p much the same

i feel like they were just trying to tell u ur not alone… while yes, arkansas vs india are two different distances it is still distance and u are both feeling the same thing.

I can’t tell if it was a poor attempt to sympathize or a poor attempt to one up you. Either way probably would have been better to keep her mouth shut

I mean I don’t know your roomyor how she said it but it’s entirely possible she meant it in a “you’re not alone, I sympathize with you” way

India is 100% okay rn politically I have friends who travel there regularly and others who live there now, unless u go to Kashmir I don’t understand why you’re nervous, unless it’s bc you love him and you’re gonna miss him then that’s totally valid, but otherwise it’s a normal country w day to day operations

Why are you feeling sad and nervous abt it? It’s so lucky he gets to travel the world for work it’s my dream. Imagine the gifts and stories he’ll bring back for u

He’s gone to India like 5 other times & it’s not that he doesn’t kinda need cool things to experience but he didn’t want to go and he had to go during Easter and he’s obviously getting older as people do😂& I just worry if something happens he’s alone and like 24 hours away, which he’s home now & he should be retiring soon but I just needed to rant about it bc I’m still not over what my roommate said, maybe she meant it in a“youre not alone” way but she constantly tried to one up me&my roommates

i will say that your roommate probably can’t relate to the concern of a family member being in a foreign country but danger isn’t a risk exclusive to travel and she might be worried about her mom even though she hasn’t left the country

India doesn’t exactly have the most stable political climate or infrastructure at the moment. It’s completely valid to be nervous to travel there

No, it’s not the same tbh, I’m an international student and my family lives so far away I can only go home if I have more than a week off. My roommate flew to north carolina for a weekend i can’t fly home for a weekend

The prime minister? The religious tensions? The colorism? The caste issues? The issues facing women? My friend is from there and it is not all sunshine and rainbows or somewhere to go completely uneducated about the possible risks. Hell, there’s a level 2 travel advisory from the state dept. for crime and terrorism

Not all of us can afford plan tickets whenever anyway 😭😭 that’s what they’re trying to say, so in a sense it is actually the same thing.

The president? The racism? The gun violence? The policy brutality? The healthcare system? The student debt crisis? The opioid epidemic? If someone travels to India and falls sick, at least they don't have to pay thousands of dollars for a simple blood test. We live in the US and it's certainly not all freedom and democracy or a place to be in without recognising the very real issues. Hell there's a level 2 and level 3 travel advisory in parts of the US too for mass shootings and civilian unrest.

Your knowledge and stereotypes say a lot more about your bias than it does about India.

And if someone I knew was traveling to, say, LA for any reason right now I’d be concerned about them too? What exactly are you implying? I don’t have “a bias” against India, I studied it at uni. The Bombay riots, Black Friday, babri mosque. Police complicity. How it’s pretty much the same politically because the same person is still in charge despite most people not liking him

The events you are referring to happened in the 1990s...

And as I said, politically, it’s pretty much the same. The tension stems from these events
