My roommate stopped paying me for the electric even though I send her a Venmo request for it every month. I started slowly taking certain small things from her room until she says something and I will demand a “ransom” for the things back.

Do you have access to the electrical switchboard? You could also just turn off the power to her room until she pays the money.

Have her pay it off by letting you crack

It could be solved by just asking for the money

All I’m gonna say is that is not a good idea

You think they are taking stuff before they asked numerous times? Bad roommates can’t be fixed with communication I mf wish

Close your account with the electric company and tell her she has to open her own account in she wants power and/or take her ass to small claims. Oh and move out

Even in the worst of economic times and closest of proximities, we’re still heartless to each other.

What do you want OP to do then? They’ve requested money for months and is at their wits end trying to get her to contribute to a bill that as far as we know she’s capable of paying. She wouldn’t get away with dodging payment if she was the sole person responsible for the bill why should be allowed to dodge it when she’s not?

What if they literally couldn’t pay it? You lot never know anyone’s business and you’re operating solely on the small hit of context you were given. I see your point but there’s so many other layers you may not know about

Yes we’re both working with the same limited information but again, what do you want OP to do?

You ignored half of what I said.

Try to learn about the situation their roommate is in. Ask questions, literally anything beside committing petty theft over something that we all stress over. Especially in a limited financial capacity like college…

I ignored it because it still doesn’t make it fair to OP. She is clearly in a desperate situation of her own if she’s resorting to petty theft to resolve it. I can ask all the questions in the world and be on my roommate side till the cows come home, but that doesn’t change the fact that OP is being put in a bad situation themselves because of it. That’s why I kept my suggestions to stuff that would be real world consequences. If you can’t pay your bill the lights get shut off.

If you owe someone a considerable amount of money, they may take you to court to get it back. Just because someone is struggling does not mean they get to take advantage of another person.

How is learning abt their situation gonna get the bills paid. It’s not OP job to research resources and come up with a plan to help their roommate pay (mind u all of this is assuming they can’t pay, which was never stated to be the case) Your suggestion isn’t a resolution nor is it the responsibility of OP. Don’t rent with a stranger and except them to bail you out.

I never said anything about expecting a bailout. You’re correct but can two things not be correct at the same time. I think it’s pretty self centered to commit a literal crime because of an unknown financial situation. If they aren’t paying you, say something and don’t just request money and then take their private property, wtf?

It’s so much easier to go hey, if you don’t have it, I get it. Pay me when you can vs stealing. But that’s just me
