AITA if I’m upset that my roommate, 1 of 4 (me included) is not letting me get my ESA cat, which everyone but her is ok with bc her mom is severely allergic. I’m mad bc her mom doesn’t live here, and plus MY cat would stay in MY room.

i dont think youre the asshole, but i do understand your roommate. my mon is also really allergic to cats, enough so that if shes in a room where a cat has one been (even if its been months and the room has been cleaned) her throat will start to close. While it's unlikely your roommate's mom will be staying over (at least i hope) your roommate could be worried about their mom helping them move out or going home on break with their clothes being around the cat allergen.

its probably an excuse bc she doesnt want a cat in the house but doesnt know how to directly tell you which is lowk fair not to want a cat

I had this happen to me but it involved my service dog; she’s a sweet baby and my roommate one of three was “allergic” but she knew months before we moved in that I had a service animal. My dog was registered with the school and state and she still said I wasn’t allowed to have it. She wound up saying I either had to move or the dog had to go; she was then later kicked out of our dorm because she started to harass me, my dog, and my bf only stayed one night because his car broke down.

This happened to me like a week ago. I just moved. Sucks, but it’s better than living on eggshells or not bringing your cat.

so her issue is that when her mom visits shes going to be staying here with us in the girls room…

If your cat is staying in your room, there shouldn’t be an issue. Also, is this something you’ve spoken to your apartment managers about?

Because if the girl isn’t allergic, her mom should be out of the discussion.

yeah im worried its gonna start a rift tbh but ik her mom shouldn’t actually matter. and yeah the apt people know, i have my esa letter just no cat yet bc i was waiting to settle in, but the apt is very accepting of it

Ok. I’d talk to your apartment complex and ask what you should do. Dont leave any information out lol

now if its because she wants her mom to regularly stay over, absolutely not the asshole. let her know that your cat isnt just a pet, it's a tool to aid your mental health. she shouldnt be staying over in the first place. you have paperwork saying you need your cat, if she wants to see her mom she can go visit.

I do get that which is why I’m conflicted. Like I was by no means ever going to let my cat just roam, it would be in my room. And she is not forced to see it either and I love to clean. My thing too is I work with horses too (like almost every day for HOURS) and the moms asthmatic too so I’m confused.

yeah, I’m not sure how often she’s planning to visit… which cat or not I personally don’t feel comfortable with a 5th roommate who’s a parent. but she’s supposedly gonna visit as much as she can and when she does stay over.

Honestly, I’d tell the roommate to take it up with the property manager. 💀

yeah I think I’ll need to. And it sucks bc the 3 of them are all friends and requested to be roommates so I’m just the odd one out, not to say theyre not nice but it makes it awkward.

Not your problem tho. You pay to live there also. The only thing that could complicate it is if that roommate is suddenly allergic to cats.

id understand not wanting a cat, the cat isnt going to leave my room though. the only time is when id take it outside for walks and trips and stuff. it truly is for my mental health so id hope shed just be up front with me so i can at least come to an agreement with her

Get them approved by the office and don’t say anything. If she brings it up say “He’s registered in the office, maybe talk to them”
