Your roommate is still a human being with autonomy who should understand that they’re living with another human being, it doesn’t matter how depressed they are I’d be livid if my roommate was a mess all the time and pulled the “I’m depressed” card, you SHARE that space it’s totally okay to be a little irritated or downright mad at someone for doing that shit

I have like waves mostly times o forget to take my medicine where I just can’t bring myself to leave my bed but I do try my best to keep my room as clean as possible but my clothes and my desk are so hard to keep in order during those times. I mean I literally blink and it’s full of shit. I think it’s fair to be upset tho tbh I live in constant fear my roommate hates me

it’s okay to be frustrated, and you should tell them that. meet in the middle if they’re struggling that badly, maybe offer to help them where they need it. depression, while common, is serious, and there are ways to express how you feel without making them feel worse.

I would definitely consider having a conversation with your roommate but you also aren’t a bad person for being irritated about your living space being a mess. Yes depression can be debilitating as someone who has it, but that doesn’t give you the right to subject your roommate who is paying rent to an unclean living environment. I do find it odd that you would be annoyed about them never leaving their room cause how does that affect you haha

lowkey part of why I'm trying to get my own room or at least private bedroom because ik I get in episodes where I can't get the energy to clean or put things away

No, you’re not a horrible person. I’ve been through depression before on a few occasions and yes, the room can be the first thing to go, but in those cases I was living on my own (or rather, with my parents. Point is nobody else sleeping in that room) But cleaning up is manageable even if it takes progress when depressed. For others I know that realizing how it’s impacting their roommate has helped them get more motivated to clean it up. Is it possible they just don’t realize?

Seems like you’ve never REALLY struggled with something that heavy before this sounds slightly ignorant ngl.

I have Bipolar 2 with severe depressive episodes. I still consider the comfort of my roommate though because it’s a shared space & she paid to live here too. Things like taking out the trash and not leaving crusty bowls of food around are considerations that benefit BOTH parties, they should be the bare minimum. And with depression, it really does help to exist in a clean space. But I understand how debilitating it can get, it’s not fair for our struggles to harm others though.

Still not an excuse to make your roommate live in disgusting conditions. i totally have been there with my depression which is why i choose to live alone. its completely unacceptable and not an excuse at all to put someone else through a situation where they would have to live in filth

I think its ignorant to not consider that your depression room could be contributing to your roommates mental health as well
