I mean they have to start somewhere, you can’t expect someone to be instantly good at something. That’s why practice is a thing Could always offer to help or give advice

That’s why the first post literally says to do, get help bc they’ve done fcked up so much that’s it’s ridiculous at this point lol. I’m not shaming someone for not being good right off the bat but continuing to fck up and stuff is diff

Yeah I get that but saying ā€˜get help’ without attempting to help yourself doesn’t really offer a solution. Maybe they don’t know anyone who’s good at cooking and trial and error is their only option. I’m just saying if it’s that bad maybe instead of judging just take 5-10 minutes and be like ā€œhave you tried doing it this way insteadā€ offering a quick demonstration for them to try next time. Kindness goes a long way

I think you misunderstand, I’m not the OP in the post. I just thought it was funny. Also I taught myself and my friends how to cook and it has never been bad enough where the smells make others uncomfortable bc there’s things like google, and YouTube that’ll help. I am aware how kindness can help but it also may just be the roommate purposely being incompetent after a certain point. We live in a day and age where not being able to cook is based on others and not the people around them.

ā€œpurposely incompetentā€ 🤣🤣🤣 aint no one making rank ass food on purpose. Also there’s another side to this post i would like to add, not saying it’s the actual reason just speculation but sometimes racist ppl make fun of and look down on the strong smell of foods from different cultures. This person might not just be an asshole and could ALSO be racist

That’s a valid point but i also know cases of people making rank as food on purpose or not cleaning so their roomies will have too. I hope it’s not racism as a non white person who makes diff dishes I still haven’t gotten comments about my food šŸ˜‚ bc at a certain point it’s on the chef to learn.

I figured you weren’t the op, I was just trying to further explain my view on the topic. I’m sorry if it sounded like I was directing it at you specifically, I was trying to word it generally. It was really nice of you to help your friends though, I know it’s not always easy to find time to do that so I bet it meant a lot to them YouTube and google definitely help but there’s a few things that are hard to get across without direct help, for example when I first moved in with my roommate (1/2)

She was really bad at seasoning and burning food so she’d end up with some wonky seasoning combos that filled our apartment but she improved overtime after some advice on how to pair seasoning better and practice

I’m always happy to help. I grew up homeless so I learned to be resourceful, and thanks for clarifying I’m autistic and know I can come off rude that wasn’t my intentions. But if you look up recipes online and follow them, then you won’t have those issues. And yes it does take practice but this is just a roommate rant, I don’t take most things in this group srs at all

I really hope it’s not racism too, there’s so many amazing dishes out there and ignorance like that can really impact someone from continuing foods they find comfort in #1, if you don’t mind me asking what type of food do you usually make? I’m always looking for something new to try

I sure hope it isn’t, if it is racism hit em with a pan, and I don’t mind at all, right now I’m obsessed with Cajun boiled peanuts (which I know can be long to make from scratch lol) but Asian stir fry, pizzas, gumbo, kale soup, Alfredo, char siu bao, pork dumplings. There’s endless possibilities!

Being resourceful is really good with cooking! I grew up learning that recipes are just a suggestion after you get them down (basically measuring with your soul and adding what feels right) so I’ve had my fair share of cooking fails too but there’s so much joy in sharing food and the cooking with others that I felt it was a big loss for them to not reach out and help when the perfect bonding opportunity showed up I typically don’t either, but I feel like this one led us to a nice convo though

Those are just things I’ve made recently, I typically have dinners every week on Friday night for my friends so sometimes I learn completely new dishes bc I like to cook from scratch especially with allergies and eating disorders to account for.

Absolutely. :) I feel the same way about both of those. I’ve never really had to use recipes unless people want the food a specific way but I’ve always loved cooking I’m srs gonna be a house husband

I’ve never heard of Cajun boiled peanuts, they sound really good though! I’m going to look up a recipe and see if I can make some this weekend, kale soup and char siu bao are also going to the top of my list of things to try making, thank you for the suggestions!

Sushi is really fun to make, did you make California rolls? It’s good being able to improvise and do what feels right when cooking, it’s definitely a skill worth having Cup noodles can be tricky though, I usually do the boiling water method so I don’t need to microwave them

I have made cali rolls! And it really was, I don’t like rice tho so it was harder for me to make sure they tasted right lol but my friend enjoyed them :) and frrrrr even my partner (nonbinary) showed me how and laughed with me bc of it lol I can’t microwave crap and I’ll try that!! I’ve always been the type to just get the boxes and make a batch with my seasonings and eggs etc

Thanks, I grew up in the Midwest so the options aren’t as vast here but my grandma was a really good cook and taught me nice variety of things so I’ve enjoyed being able to expand my palette from there

Sushi rice is really good, I’d recommend onigiri but if you don’t like rice it might not be the best choice for you Just make sure you cover it so it keeps the heat in! I just make it as a need it but if your water is hot enough it shouldn’t have any issues cooking and egg too

Oooo thanks for the advice!! I’ll def keep that in mind :) and the Midwest options are pretty limited but I’m glad you get to experience more!! Rn I just got back from France and have been practicing some of their dishes like crĆØme brĆ»lĆ©e etc to see if I can recreate them

Ofc! You definitely need to go looking for it here but there are options. I’m lucky to live in a bigger city now so there’s more variety to where I was raised lol That sounds like a lot of fun! I took a trip to London and I was able to try so many amazing foods from the food trucks in the area I was staying, there was such a wide variety of different things to try (not just your typical British food)
