My old roommate had sex while I was in there twice, the second time she vomited in the middle of the floor. You’re absolutely right to lose respect for her, and that is a form of sexual harassment. I’d either move out (that’s what my RA told me to do :/) or bring it up with the RA or the housing association, either way don’t just let it happen anymore, it’ll only get worse

Sexual assault requires you be physically touching the other person, or they physically touch you. What OP is describing is gross and definitely title IX worthy, but not legally assault.

You were rude to me first, I returned the energy. It’s also a pet peeve of mine when someone uses a word without knowing what it means. Especially a word as serious as sexual assault, because it takes the real meaning out of it, and when actual SA happens people won’t understand what it truly represents.

It can be seen as both. Sexual harassment because the bad roommate created a hostile environment. Sexual assault because, even though OP wasn’t explicitly touched sexually, that bad roommate essentially involved her in their sexual acts. Unwillingly exposing someone to sex is sexual assault.

According to what I found (this is the only thing that directly answers my question). All of the “characteristics” that go with SA require force, control, or threatening. She’s not being forced to watch, she can leave the room. Which is why it’s harassment, instead.

True, but we don’t know the circumstances that this exactly happened. We can’t say for certain they weren’t forced, pressured, manipulated to watch, or for some reason was unable to leave the room. That’s why I was saying an argument can be made for both. Without knowing the details (which I don’t want know OP 😭🙏), we can’t say for certain if it was just sexual harassment or both.

Watching is still a sexual act in some cases, since people can have fetishizes for that, and roping a third party into your fetish is sexual assault. OP might not’ve been an active participant, but they were involved directly.
