i just got off my shift and had a table of 12 people who each got fairly expensive meals ($25-$35 per person) and appetizers and desserts. stayed in the restaurant for 5 hours. the bill was over $600. i got a $7 tip and a note that said "great service"

it kind’ve is actually, typically, servers get paid under minimum wage because tips are usually expected (and therefore, supplement the rest of their income)

if tip-wages plus tips doesn't result in pay that matches the federal minimum wage ($7.25/hr) for hours worked your employer is required to pay you the difference. those tips are not going towards making your pay *exceed* the federal minimum wage, they are going towards making your pay *meet* that minimum. a supplement to a *mandated* base wage is not a raise

frankly trying to redefine a raise as *any* increase to pay - even if it is to meet legally required minimum wages - is ridiculous. a raise is when your base wage or salary goes up, not when you get a bonus or a tip or a kickback
