The hill I will die on is that the problem with Jar Jar in Episode I was not his inclusion as comic relief, nor his mannerisms, or any of the stuff people usually complain about. It was that he had no arc, so everything good that happened to him felt like luck and it felt cheap instead of deserved.
If we got to see a real moment of him taking real decisive brave action, then he would have gone from “clumsy dude who just gets lucky” to “guy who’s clumsy but ultimately a brave and good person worthy of respect.” Even considering “yeah but it’s actually the Force guiding things, not luck,” or the fact that he was nice and helpful in helping Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan, it still felt cheap when none of his kills on the battlefield were purposeful and he kinda wimps out when surrounded.
People also gave Ahmed Best shit, but like, his job was to make the character silly and funny for kids, and as a kid he was my favorite character…so Best did a damn good job with his assignment. Also I haven’t watch the Clone Wars yet so idk if his characterization really improves there according to my critiques. But yeah, that’s my soapbox
YESS he was absolutely my favorite character as a kid! And I really liked him in clone wars because although he was extremely clumsy, he really did try to help other people and was loyal. And when you think about it, he is a water species meant to live in swamps so him always above water would definitely make them clumsy. He’s meant for swimming not running
Idk I kinda agree he didn’t have much of an arc but I feel like going from cowardly outcast to being brave enough to at the end fighting with his people was pretty satisfying I think the initial reaction to a comedic relief was what most people at the time took issue with like Ewoks was somewhat similar
