I don’t think it’s the best idea for a numerical SW movie B plot, but the planet and the costumes are amazing. I’m not a TLJ hater, I actually think it has some of the best looks and cinematography in the series, but Ryan Johnson would have made a much better Canto Bight heist oceans 11 movie than a sequel to TFA.

Honestly I don’t hate it. It does make the movie drag a little bit, but there are also aspects I do like about the inclusion of the plotline. I like the setting of Canto Bight and the characters/creatures that are there. I also love the Casino guard guys that chase them. So even tho it slows the movie down a little bit, there are still some things I like about it

It sets up a mcguffin (the master code breaker) that gets axed, a love story between Finn and Rose that gets axed, just the whole thing shouldn’t have happened. The sheer audacity of having someone who was kidnapped as a child by a militant extremist group, then forced into a lifetime of servitude, be lectured to about the evils of slavery. *Chefs kiss*

If I could forget that entire movie I would tbh, I think we see more exploration of Finn and rose with the canto bight plot line but at the expense of exploring Finn’s force sensitivity and the whole thing with Poe back with the evacuation being completely out of character. And it’s just poorly written like, they come for one reason and then it just gets swept aside for some other character with absolutely zero introduction who ends up selling them out.

I thought it was fun, it was definitely the part of the movie I was most invested in

It paints both Finn and rose as being incredibly naive and while there may be some grounding to that, I don’t think it works well and it ends up being more frustrating then enlightening, especially when it ends up costing the resistance even more and setting the stakes like, exhaustingly higher.

Star Wars movies (especially the middle chapters in a trilogy) are known for having multiple plot-lines with their characters split up from each other. So The Last Jedi isn’t any different in that way, but I agree the plotline could have been better. I don’t hate the plotline, but it isn’t perfect…

Bruh we’re all on SW yak, I said B plot bc yes ik they all have multiple plot lines. I don’t hate it but I think there was a better story to tell. I think they should have focused on Finn struggling after leaving the first order and starting a storm trooper rebellion like all of the deleted scenes. Finn’s entire TLJ plot should have lead to his dual with Phasma, like Rey’s lead to het facing Snoke.

When I read your comment at first I thought you were trying to say it’s not a good idea for a Star Wars film to have a b plot. I see what you’re saying now. And yeah they could have done more with Finn in the TLJ. Still, he did have a logical arc tho. Finn’s arc in the film is him going from being a runaway stormtrooper to someone who actually cares about the Resistance and would be willing to die for it. At the end of TFW, the only reason he goes back is to save Rey, so TLJ develops him more

But I do wish TLJ would’ve continued his subtle arc of uncovering his forge abilities. That plotline is hinted at briefly in TFW and then ignored in TLJ and then finally brought up again in TROS

Super cool place I’d like to have explored more in a future movie or show but yea just way too long for the movie imo

I forgot about the code breaker actually pretty fun character but with Finn I feel like they set up such an interesting premise for his character that I haven’t seen in in any other media from Star Wars but they just ignored it in the second movie like bro was hitting one liners while killing what you’d presume is other people who were kidnapped as children and indoctrinated

We actually never really meet the code breaker. Instead Finn and Rose get arrested for parking illegally and get put in a cell with DJ, who coincidentally is also a master at code breaking 🥳 . But yeah I’ve seen a lot of posts about how Finn was a lot of people’s favorite character only for him to become a shell of himself.

Honestly I’m not sure that Rian Johnson was setting up a romance between Finn and Rose. It’s obvious Rose liked Finn, but when she kisses him at the end of the movie he doesn’t even kiss her back

I do think they super underutilized Finn and Poe in 8 and 9 but I honestly do not get why people hate Rose as much as they do, I loved her.

I did really enjoy the ideas and characters in TLJ but it wasn’t very cohesive, a lot of the characters felt completely different from TFA and the original trilogy, and it felt like they were trying to brush off everything people were invested in from TFA and left like absolutely nowhere for Episode 9 to go.
