I think so too. The sequel trilogy really isn’t a terrible trilogy. Is it perfect? Absolutely not. But no Star Wars trilogy is perfect. Really, the only thing people complain about with the sequels are the writing. They still have outstanding music, acting, set design, prop design, visual effects, etc. And just like the prequels, I think lots of people will come around to the writing over time
i entirely agree, provided that the sequels get a masterpiece of a show to back them up like the prequels did with tcw. it’s a powerful mix of retroactive depth/plot hole filling/characterization and nostalgia. i think ppl in our generation will continue to be more critical even as we grow to like them more, but younger gens will view them as “their” star wars movies. much like us and the OT purists
No, the main issue with the prequels in dialogue. The underlying story is fantastic and also unique from the original trilogy. The reason people weren't high on the trilogy when it released was because they didn't expect it to just be as good as the original trilogy, but even better. Over time, the fans have grown to love the prequels because they're fun and emotionally gut wrenching. We got one of the best animated shows to tie the trilogy together and delve deeper into the main characters.
well yes. but people also said that kind of thing about the prequels, particularly based on legends content but based off just the ot as well. all i’m saying is that if i said the same thing as my original comment about the prequels on a forum 20 years ago i probably would’ve gotten the same response from an OT fan ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ there’s no way to know the future and how things will change but i can make an educated guess based on past sw and general media trends
We got to see the backstory of already beloved characters and the events that shaped them. With the sequels however, they do not respect the characters from the original trilogy. Han Solo's character arc is completely reversed. Luke is made out to be a completely different character and person than he was and does things that Luke Skywalker would never do. This isn't even mentioning the new characters who are completely uninteresting and horribly written.
The biggest issue however, is that the story is awful. The trilogy is only connected by the fact that the characters are the same. It is very obvious that Disney did not plan the trilogy out and it shows. There were two different directors that seemed to have a pissing match against each other while making the movies. The trilogy can't and won't ever be liked because the story itself is just so bad. (I'm also #s 2 and 3 | just couldn't fit it all in 1 text block)
i’m not gonna defend the last 2, it’s not worth getting into. but i’m gonna get controversial here & say that that’s kinda just how star wars works. everything rips of everything and that’s how we got the second, bigger, more powerful death star the first time. it kinda makes sense that if palpatine had a second one and also had backups of himself (not getting into if that’s a good decision…) he might be working on a third too. and what better than a perversion of the jedi’s most sacred planet?
it’s not really creative or original or incredible writing but it makes sense with the plot they seemed to be gearing up to go after, with the imperial remnants rebranding to the first order and whatnot. a lot of star wars isn’t incredible/creative storytelling & is just classic tropes like the hero’s journey in a trench coat. why it’s so amazing is HOW the story is told & i think tfa had the building blocks to start a great trilogy but got screwed over by what should be basic trilogy planning
fix? no. make better? possibly. w/luke, maybe he was actually protecting something important, idk. like how when ezra met obi wan he just pretended to be pathetic in shameful exile to protect luke. maybe rey is similar. who knows, im not a writer, but i think there’s things they could do to make it somewhat better in a way that new viewers won’t see a problem with
