Most slaves were paid a very small wage and eventually earned enough to buy their freedom(and their children weren't born into slavery)... but things started getting worse after we formed the US, slaves we're treated more as property, and the slave trade skyrocketed. With a massive population, they started decreasing their rights to prevent the poor from realizing that they should ally themselves with slaves. It's capitalism.
