There is no place for a trillionaire on an Earth where people don't have water, food, shelter or medical care. Illogical, disgraceful, disgusting and completely diabolical bullshit. Hoarding such a vast amount of money is inconsiderate and reprehensible.

Wdym 'hoarding a vast amount of money' He owns companies that are worth a trillion dollars he doesn't (and couldn't) have that sitting in a bank account If you want to tax him for $150 billion you would have to force him to do exactly what he is doing right now, selling a large part of his companies for money and, in doing so, raise the worth of your companies and therefore your net worth overall

Elon has gotten rich off the American taxpayer and the lack of competition. We’ve seen it for over a century, whenever American companies can’t compete with their global counterparts, they close the market and limit competition. Also, SpaceX and Tesla are way overvalued, especially SpaceX

Meh, regarding the whole illiquid thing, they could just do a wealth tax over like $10 million and then they would just take out loans against their assets to pay it off, avoiding the capital gains tax the same way they always do. No big deal

There’s a trade off to everything. Do you propose we go back to the system 200+ years ago that doesn’t incentivize innovation/tech advancements? Yea we may not have billionaires/trillionaires, but w/o that very system we would be where we were 200+ years ago: drastically lower quality of life. The point is he doesn’t have that money. That’s his net worth, not what he has to spend. He applied himself and worked grueling hours to build multiple influential companies. He also took risks when starting those companies, as there is always the risk of going bankrupt if your business fails. He didn’t rob the world of money and hoard it for himself, he created something that expanded the economy, therefore generating wealth for himself and others.

He doesn't have that amount of money in any form If it was possible for him to turn his company into a trillion dollar bill magically you might have a point, but the only way for him to get that much money in cash is if someone else buys his companies from him (which they are partially doing now) So the people with money that could be but isnt being used to help people are the ones that are buying stock in his company from him ig? we need tax reform; stocks should be taxed at a rate equal to that of an income. there is still income coming from his various companies that he pockets. he can also use the "stocks" to buy real life things through loans by using tesla share as collateral which are not taxed as income or capital gain.

Anonymous replying to -> OP 16w

You’re truly not listening. He doesn’t have 145 billion sitting in a bank somewhere. His net worth is illiquid meaning it’s all tied up in his companies and not cash. Taxing unrealized capital gains would quite literally cause the downfall of stocks as a whole. That means all the way from big companies down to mom and pop stores who have privately held shares. I think taxation is theft full stop, but if you’re going to do it, that way isn’t it.

Taxing stocks would only work if you sell those stocks. Because, unless you sell them, there is no income other than dividends, which are taxed. Also, if you start a company, guess what, YOU also pocket some of the income. And yes, if you have shares, you can borrow against them, but those loans have to be paid back with other loans + interest. If those stocks plummet, you have to sell other shares to pay off the loan, which is a risk anyone is able to make.

Humanity was better before massive taxation. You will never tax a nation / society into prosperity. Assets can be borrowed against sure, but the asset is used as a collateral so if for some reason he can’t pay that debt back, he looses infinitely more than what he borrowed, which is the trade off of being able to do that. How should we address illiquid and unrealized assets since you seem to have the solution?

Dude, we are still using the system that was in place over a 100 years ago. When American companies can’t compete on the global stage they have the government close the market and prop them up. Tesla can’t compete in the Chinese market and they are losing traction in Europe, it does well here because Chinese manufacturers can’t enter the market.
