At what point in evolution was DNA like “yeah it would be great if women had a week where they bleed uncontrollably and have extreme pain that can be as intense as a heart attack or a burst appendix, but at least they aren’t pregnant” Cause I hate this

Bio major here - the unfortunate thing about evolution is that it pushes what increases survivability and fitness (reproductive success), not what is good or nice. Think of how some bird parents will allow their offspring to kill each other and raise the strongest one. Sometimes natures cruel.

The leading theory is that bleeding and painful periods pushed our ancestors to mate more and reject incompatible mates. If you arent pregnant and you have a partner, it (in nature) may indicate poor mate quality and worsen your survival and fitness as a female. Hence, females with more “encouragement” to mate and find productive mates were selected for

As for why we have outside periods and not inside (reabsorbed) ones… idk tbh. Some mammals get lucky, others dont. I would guess it has to do with us being social (maybe its a social cue?) but id need to look into it more

* A quick google search suggests that it may be due to how human embryos implant into the uterus/ unique human uterine structure, and/or the fact that humans are not estrus-based mammals (we are menses-based, so we can mate year-round instead of seasonally)
