it’s so embarrassing seeing the prompt left in the copy paste. but knowing the ppl who rely on ai heavily it’s not surprising. cannot use their own brain to write an OPINION which is sad </3

this reminds me of the time this kid used snap ai to write a dbq and forgot to remove the “Hey owen, sure…”

What’s even crazier is you said “near by” instead of “nearby”

Not if you use it correctly. Guaranteed older generations would look at our use of the internet the same way (instead of going to the library). Just like any other tool: you can wield it correctly or incorrectly.

ai is actively destroying our environment most notably our water supply. it is a pointless creation that does not truly innovate in any way, just allows for laziness to arise. it spreads misinformation, steals art, and robs people of their critical thinking skills. it is pushing us one step closer to being like the ppl from wall-e, lazy and brainless.

It allows for laziness and can do all of those things. However, it does have its benefits. It has the ability to help. It can be used to summarize emails, to recommend ways to cut down on waste, to guide research. It can be used as a tool which by compiling information and making it easier and faster to access and through intelligence it can save time. This allows for innovation.

>summarise emails- that’s a basic comprehension task that anyone with a reading ability above a 3rd grade level should be able to do. promoting laziness. >recommend ways to cut down waste-ai actively creates waste and pollutes our water. you can do your own research using reliable sources and get better outcomes. >guide research - again, a critical thinking skill. if you are researching a topic, you do a broad search for gen knowledge then narrow down to more specific areas from there…

… you also bounce ideas off of peers (peer editing) and mentors to help hone in the research. another way ai is used in a lazy way. >compile info to make easier and faster - life already moves by too fast, and needs to slow down. this point bleeds horribly into the larger issue of our capitalist society expecting everything to be done faster than before to churn out profits faster than before all while the slow joys of life are torn away because no matter how fast the work is done, they will…

…always expect more work to be done. using ai for school prevents you from actually comprehending the information in the assignment. using ai for work tasks just gets the task done faster so your boss can give you another task to fill the day. then you go home and consume ai slop ads and memes that have no soul. it kills creativity. it kills joy.

I did my undergrad without touching AI. Never downloaded ChatGPT or anything of the sort and I firmly believe it made me a better student. But when you step away from your email due to vacation or sickness and end up with 100 or so emails. AI can make sure you aren’t wasting your day. Not everyone is an hourly employee. Some people are salaried which means they work until the work is done. It can proofread important messages and documents before I send them. Yes there are peers but…

I can’t take my peers from their work so they can doublecheck my work. I’m not sending a memo or a formal document out without it being checked a second time – and no, that doesn’t mean copy and paste. I will use my critical thinking skills to determine which edits are appropriate.

If AI is poorly used, it is bad. But when used correctly, it can be helpful. It’s not laziness to use a tool. That’s what they would’ve said years ago about using Google. It’s called adaption. But you use it wisely. Just like you don’t use the first result on Google for research, you don’t rely on AI for everything.

i do not care how “easy” it makes life, the pollution to our water is detrimental and is actively destroying our drinking water supply. irreversible damage. not to mention the studies showing it literally destroyed neuron links and in some cases has caused psychosis from chronic usage

Could you link the studies you’re talking about? I’ve never heard of this and I’m just curious where you got it from lol (for the neuron links and psychosis)

i can’t find the one i was specifically talking about for the neuron link but this MIT one addresses a similar point https://www.media.mit.edu/publications/your-brain-on-chatgpt/ psychosis one is more so related to chat bots, there hasn’t been a specific study conducted yet but there have been reports from families where their young adult and teen kiddos who use chat bots to supplement friendship or even erotic texting have begun developing antisocial, depressive, and/or psychosis like-

symptoms and in some cases were admitted by family members to mental health facilities because of how severe it has gotten. ik it not as reputable as a scientifically conducted study, but several families experiencing it feels like there would be some link between the usage and results. tho i am willing to speculate that those family members had pre existing mental health concerns as well that grew more severe with the reliance on chat bots

But AI is here. It can cause harm, but so does cars, plastic, cell phones, etc. We can’t ban it, we can’t avoid it. Time is better served educating people about proper usage. How to use it effectively, when not to use it, the harms of using it.

yeah harm reduction is important, but you can still advocate for it to not be used and not contribute to its usage. drugs for example, while i for. support shooting up heronie, i will always support access to clean needles and narcan. with ai, i will not support the usage and will judge hard core, but as a teacher will have kids knowledgeable on least harmful practices. most of our tech does over time cause harm to the planet, and im a strong advocate for clean energy and finding sustainable-

alternatives. when i first heard of electric cars as a kid i was hype for the green alternative before learning later about the batteries. but their harm over time is still less than gas cars. using ai creates more pollutant over time than simply owning and using a phone does, using research based, etc. capitalist “innovation” has continually lead to worse planet killers over time, and we can do our best to avoid them. ai isn’t a necessity to function in our society, it’s a tool that supports-

corporate greed, padding profits so they have to hire less people. phones and cars have unfortunately become a near necessity to function in our society, or at the very least having access to the internet. i wish it wasn’t that way though, walkable cities and long distance transit should’ve been prioritised but the profits were in personalised devices. it all comes back to corporate greed.
