So first thing that comes to mind is the rising cost of living. Most things cost money to do these days, and so does driving or public transport. Everything is getting more expensive (food, housing, medicine), so people don’t have as much to spend on fun social activities and people don’t want to go out as much
Second thing that comes to mind is our infrastructure. Car-dependent infrastructure is unfriendly and sprawled out, making it hard to have spontaneous outings like one would be able to do in walkable cities. It becomes a hassle to go out and do things because you have to sit in traffic and maybe even make multiple stops far away from each other. You have to plan everything out and it takes more effort, and that reduces the amount of people who want to go out and do things
But lowkey I think it’s intentional, not bad design. The idea of the nuclear family from the 50s was designed to isolate us into smaller units, as opposed to multi-generational housing, which is much more natural for us as social creatures (as much as the family drama may be annoying lol)
I’m actually really hopeful for Zohran Mamdani’s policies if he can pull them off. Free childcare and free buses will directly help with the loneliness crisis. Parents will be freed from childcare burdens which will allow them to interact with the world again (I also believe parenthood is meant for a village, not two isolated adults), children will be able to learn social skills from other kids (daycare really helps with development), and more people will go out because they can travel for free
The idea of posting about that 16 year old trauma of mine on Reddit of all places seems hilarious. I do like to write obviously but I think it’s better to stick with professionals for now. The trauma made me intimately understand what it’s like to be dead and I recently found I can place blame on my otherwise great mother for having the trauma soooooooooo I need to work on that
