The sad truth is literally no one did at the period of time. For context, the reconquista and Spanish Inquisition all happened within the same timeframe as Columbus’s voyage. Spain was very energetic and willing to conquer and convert anyone they could. Columbus was the only person stupidly brave enough to attempt to sail to the east by going west. Not knowing of a landmass already populated that was right between Europe and Asia.

It’s just to say that Columbus was uniquely evil is a little disingenuous putting him into the context of his time and place. I’m not excusing what he did at all but time and place are important when it comes to what he did.
