I LOVE studying religion! Do you have any recommendations for ways to read the Quran in an academic/historical context?

What does Islam teach about Christianity? Do we worship the same God, in your view?

I like our form of prayer tbh—it really grounds and reminds me that despite all the chaos in life—it’s always just pretty simple and temporary. It’s easy to get caught up in life and forget the things that matter, and the fact we pray 5 times a day makes it a lot harder to lose sight of that. Charity is super important, actually something not everyone knows is that knowledge is considered a form of wealth and teaching ppl is considered charity too—albeit not falling under zakat which is required

Hmmm ig one aspect of Islam I’ve been thinking abt a lot lately is environmentalism—mankind is given a duty to care for not just one another but the entire planet in Islam. We have to respect the land & treat animals with respect. I think everyone that eats meat should have to slaughter or at least see their meat slaughtered at least once so they can break past the disconnection our culture has created. Factory farms & our overall agricultural practices have rly hurt life & we need to do better

Y'know, it's been pretty awesome! I've been up since 4:30 working on a problem l've been having for over a week in my codebase and after some rly good advice I got it finally compiled perfectly like half an hour ago! We wake up at the crack of dawn for the first prayer, I go to the masjid for it over weekends, and a prof in my field also funnily enough showed up today and was the one who gave me the advice. So I'm prob just gonna chill the rest of the day and watch Superman w my friends now lol

wait that’s such a unique thought process, and while devastating, i do agree. as an environmentalist myself, i really wish society did a better job of trying to make farming and slaughtering practices less cruel and more sustainable. i’m not sure how to do it at such a large scale, but i do agree with you

Yeah we worship the same God, in the Quran Christians and Jews are called “ahl al kitab” or people of the book, basically we think y’all use a buggy virus ridden old software, but still very similar at the end of the day. One of those bugs would be deification of Jesus and the idea of a trinity, which Islam completely rejects. We believe God is absolutely 1, that Jesus peace be upon him was a human prophet born from the Virgin Mary, and that he will return to lead us all as believers in the end

So like yeah we believe in the same God, but there are substantive theological differences, what we believe to be mistakes on Christians’ part. Basically Jesus pbuh will come back & be like “Ayo what bro I did NOT say I was God—I’m just a dude—cut that out right now!” & then all the Christians will be like ohhhhh alr ig we’re just Muslim now then, and then there’s like a whole war against the anti christ everyone bands together to fight towards the end of days

The Study Quran from Nasr et. al is probably what you’re looking for

Yeah it is! It counts as charity to God even if you’re paid, as long as your ultimate intention behind it is to help your fellow man/to please God. So like say you discover a theorem, or come up with a new technique for regenerative agriculture that’s better for the environment—you get good deeds every time someone learns abt that—even after you’ve passed away. If you’re not wealthy but have plans of what to do for charity if you have wealth, you get credit for that too bc of the pure intention

Ultimately, although I think there are quick fixes like mechanistic changes in the way we interact with the environment and other living things, the root problem is actually systemic in our intentions for the world & actions. Some ppl just view all of nature as something to be used & discarded without care for the future. I think more localism, permaculture, urban farming, & less water intensive hydroponic techniques are def going to help play a role in building more sustainable systems tho

Np! Though just a heads up, it is like 2,000 or so pages. So in case that’s too long for you, the MAS Abdel Haleem English translation paired with Farrin’s Structure and Qur'anic Interpretation: A Study of Symmetry and Coherence in Islam's Holy Text is also something that could be up your alley from the academic perspective
