Didn’t get into an argument really but a strange discussion with my aunt and mom that he was evil/not. I said he literally enslaved people, took over land and said he was there first, etc. They were like “well that’s always what happened in history, more powerful people take over. There’s always bad people”
Something to consider: if you were living in that time, in the at the time “modern world” (Europe), would you have been okay with his actions? I’d bet you would be, as would most. That was the norm at the time, and you probably wouldn’t have the same perspective you do today if you lived back then.
No you’re right it was the perspective at the time. Same with after WWI, people followed Hitler cause shit was bad in Germany and they needed something. But that was then. You didn’t have as much freedom to disagree tho. Now, we can say it wasn’t right at all to do what they did. But I guess you’re still in square one homie. Sounding like PragerU with saying “lol slavery wasn’t bad! Better than dying!!!”
I’m not saying it want wrong or trying to defend any of the horrible things he did, I’m just saying that’s what happened at the time. If you, me, or pretty much anyone today was living in those times, we wouldn’t have the perspective we do today. Again, not to say that any of that stuff was right or even justifiable, but they didn’t see it the same way we do today.
That’s not what he’s saying, what he is saying that it was socially acceptable to do all those things back then if not even legal! Which goes to show how far we’ve come as a country and our way of thinking. Nobody says that it was right, but if you were brought up thinking that bad actions were OK and it took a very strong individual to show you why those actions are bad. Would you sympathize with those who are brought up.
It really does though, not too long ago one man convinced an entire society that one race should be treated poorly, then locked up and exterminated. If you grew up during that time and that’s what you were exposed to. I’m sure your moral compass would point you to a different direction. But you don’t hate a country full of people whose great grandparents did this though. I’ll say It’s good that you find this behavior unacceptable though.
The whole point is that yes, it is wrong, but the idea of it being wrong didn’t so much as cross anyone’s mind back then. Any strong convictions you have about it were only formed with the benefit of hindsight. If you lived back then, statistically you would have been okay and even supportive of everything he did.
