I don’t live in Canada, but the Canada wildfires a few years ago caused the air outside that summer to be really hard to breathe in my area (iowa)

I think it’s simply one of those things where there’s so much else going on that this type of shit gets moved to the back burner. There are several significant wars going on right now and that’s just the ones the US is involved in.
