Literally screaming across the internet that companies had better operate at a loss to conceal his fuckup. This has gotta be the loudest cover ups of all time. Like a bank robber tweeting “NOBODY TELL THE POLICE that was me at Western Square Bank on the corner of 24th and main!!” He’s forgetting companies only bend over for him when he restrains himself and lets them stay profitable. He can’t demand favors and then destroy them anyway

he’s right in the sense companies have been falsely inflecting cost for years now but the tariffs still have a direct cause of increasing cost of goods especially for small businesses. walmart can afford to eat the cost for sure but many smaller businesses cannot and have been suffering because of the tariffs.

Hey I know its confusing, but Walmart is trying to raise prices for tariffs that haven’t gone into effect. And by “eat the costs” that means make less of a profit if they want to keep getting their supplies outside the US, which is the whole point of tariffs, to encourage companies to bring production back to the US, this isn’t inconsistent with policy at all

I’m ngl “putting pressure” on companies is not gonna work. If Trump actually didn’t want companies to raise their prices then he should have made legislation to regulate them and force them to keep their prices down.

Idc have you seen how much profit Walmart makes? Idc about what some “far left” senators think. I’m saying what I think. Walmart can absolutely, positively, no doubt afford to not raise their prices but they don’t want their profit margin to go down even a tiny bit. So we should make them

These price protections are already a thing on so many types of goods like renting, homes, and construction materials The point of a policy like that isn’t to put a limit on how much the company can raise prices overall, but to set a consistent ratio of profits so that companies don’t price gouge (the thing Walmart is currently doing)

Walmart makes money because they sell millions of items a day for VERY little profit. It’s the volume of sales they’re making money from not because every item is super marked up. The current tariff on China is 30%. There’s absolutely no way Walmart could just “afford to not raise its prices”. It’s barely profiting a couple of percentage points per item.

That’s literally not true? Walmart has a 100%+ Upcharges on all of their products Also I feel like you aren’t understanding me here, ofc Walmart can still change their prices, but price control policies would make them maintain a certain profit ratio ie, they can’t raise prices unless their posts go up, which is happening under tariffs

There was this issue during Covid where, and though costs of things were going up, the increase of consumer prices was significantly higher than it could’ve been because companies took advantage of the uncertainty to triple profit margins Any good financial leader would implement a policy to restrict this, but trump is a fucking idiot who doesn’t care abt American consumers

100% up charge on all products? What reality do you live in? If that were the case local mom and shops could EASILY compete. When you add up all the overhead of maintaining a store and paying employees Walmart is pulling less than 3% per item they sell. They just happen to sell millions of items daily

Everyone in here saying “just do what the president says” is missing the point. He fucked up. He campaigned on lowering prices for people even though his policies would explicitly do the opposite, and now that it’s coming to fruition he realized he’s backed himself into a corner. Now he wants to manipulate the market in a way that would have repubs melting down if literally anyone else did this

It’s not that they can’t lower profit margins, but they will not unless legally forced to do so. If your boss asked you to take a 25% pay cut because their car broke down I’d bet you opt to keep your pay the way it is. Kamala actually ran on forcibly lowering the post-pandemic price gouging because prices never dropped and profit margins increased. You voted for prices to go up.

Except that tariffs only serve to hurt both countries bc they discourage trade, and there are also no viable manufacturing alternatives for the good tariffed All that a tariff on China does is make US companies raise prices on US consumers

We were paying a 2.5% tariff on all Chinese regulated goods during Biden’s presidency. Trump, being the smart little nepo baby he is, increased those rates to 30%, resulting in a 27.5% up charge going right to the consumer. Please tell me how tf we’re paying a lower tariff at all?

Except that there’s no possible way for a US company to ever match the prices of foreign goods, not to mention that we don’t have a the real estate or workforce to supply that kind of operation

upvote 3 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #7 17w

If we make the price of foreign goods higher than we will be to compete with the (currently) low prices, not to mention we’re making trade deals with countries like Ukraine for rare earth metals, and the UK where they buy our cars and theres a cap on how many cars they can bring here. What happens is we make deals to get things for us while bringing in more revenue, and those that don’t comply get cut out of the deal and don’t get some of the benefits of doing trade with the US

upvote 1 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #22 17w

US companies rely on foreign resources to produce American made goods. “made in america” just means assembled here. we do not have every resource necessary to make everything here. we do not have the climate to grow everything here. so the goal may be to buy American products, but it now costs more to produce bc of the tariffs

upvote 1 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #18 17w

So you missed the part where I said we’re making trade deals to get goods that we can’t produce here, but to be clear we have plenty of materials here to build in America, the tariffs though are mainly being used as leverage to lower the tariffs that have been placed on us, so we can have fairer trade, Japan had a 700% tariff on our rice, we’re gonna work it out so stuff like that doesn’t happen. Canada had a 200% cap tax on dairy from us. Using tariffs as leverage will allow us to renegotiate

upvote 1 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #22 17w

Maybe Japan has a 700% rice tax on us because we don’t produce rice so Japan wanted to seal in their market? Like we would get almost nothing from “renegotiating” these deals, which could take decades, and trump is hurting so many small businesses in the process

I was using rice as an example, and you say they tariff us to protect their markets but you can’t understand why we have tariffs to protect our own? You might be an idiot buddy 💀 lets say for instance we get a lot of cars from the Europe we put a tariff on them because we can make our own cars here and make more jobs for us here, which is why companies like Rolls Royce said they will make cars in America, the same way we put business in other countries they can do the same and put business here

upvote 1 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #7 17w

Its not right wing slop its basic economics, there are winners in trade wars when we’re charging China a 27% more on tariffs and they’re only charging us 2% more, it’s literally not right wing, because Biden kept the Trump tariffs on China, are you talking about the same Economists that said these tariffs would cause a recession?? Now they’re saying it wont??

upvote 1 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #7 17w

And one more thing it doesn’t take decades to renegotiate, we already have a new deal with the UK, we’re in the final steps of making one with India, we’re made one with Ukraine, and we’re making one with China.
