That way encourages people to work together and share the idol. The rules in the show encourage blindsides and turning on allies which is objectively more fun

Yea yall are right, I had another idea of how Genevieve could’ve used it to stay in the game too but I was too excited and forgot lol.. but I do like the idea of it boomeranging back regardless bc that opens the doors for more gameplay around it.. and if the person that gave it is voted out, there’s a few different ways to handle that as well

Manufactured blindsided are not entertaining Look at Shot in the Dark for example, it is manufactures blindsides. When every vote has to be a blindside to avoid someone playing SitD it makes every blindside significantly less impactful.

And frankly if the idol worked where it boomeranged either if the player is voted out without using it OR if played at a tribal council where the user did not receive the majority of votes, it would not encourage working together, it would provide a secondary option. The way it works now the ONLY way for it to boomerang is for you to blindside the person you gave it to, which is just production trying to manufacture drama.
