As a hamlet fan, it bothers me how much it feels like taylor never read or understood hamlet. I hate to hate on her but she isn’t giving me English teacher vibes at all. Ophelia was used by every man in her life and didn’t need saving, she needed to be

left alone. AND, the tower references and being saved lines just made it sound like she thinks Ophelia is just rapunzel

as an english major i was a little confused but its still a great song! my interpretation was always that hamlet’s madness drivers ophelia into a madness of her own, especially because hamlet kills polonius so their stories kind of mirror each others in the dead dad sense… i was definitely waiting for a reference to ophelia’s flowers and was a little disappointed there wasn’t one (the funny thing is i don’t even like shakespeare but i’ve read SO MUCH of him)

no literally. everyone is only hyping up that song so much because they clearly know just as much about it as taylor does…

I think there’s different ways of interpreting Ophelia’s character. Your way and another way is what Taylor is saying which is that she just needed someone to actually love and care about her and not cast her off for revenge. Also she did say in an interview that she took the story and didn’t like the ending so she changed it like she did in Love Story. Both interpretations are valid and I see both sides! I’m also an English teacher lol so exploring different interpretations is like half my job

Ophelia needed a Red Wood Tree to open her thighs

All she did was thank Travis for not making her suffer from the same fate as Ophelia….

i think y’all just don’t understand the song and its connections to other songs like “I Hate It Here” or “The Prophecy” . the song is not a retelling of the story of Ophelia, it’s simply a metaphor she is using to explain to her lover how much they mean to her. In her words “I like to change the story as a writing experiment”

The metaphor doesn’t work. Use rapunzel then.

being locked in a tower is a common metaphor for isolation, something she fears—just as she fears “the fate of ophelia”. because ophelia faced such a tragic fate, taylor can’t help but worry she will face a similarly terrible fate.

It’s still a poorly done metaphor and has nothing to do with the actual character. Idk why even bring her up

Like it could be easily used to show how she’s always used by people in the industry and even politicians and how it’s hurting her, but she chose to pretend Ophelia is some Disney princess

except it has everything to do with the character 😅 did Ophelia not face a terrible fate?? she did! and that’s something taylor fears! not to mention the whole misunderstanding of ophelia is something taylor definitely relates to.

Hamlet also suffered a terrible fate. So did Macbeth. Like that’s not the only connection she could bf making here

exactly!! i think it’s a connection to them as well, but being a woman would she not relate more to Ophelia than Hamlet or Macbeth?? Hamlet and Macbeth have NOT been mischaracterized to the same scale as Ophelia at all.

Yes! The song seems fun and I like the melody but there was sm potential that she just didn’t pursue

not trying to argue here, i guess i’m just asking, could it maybe be that she was saved from the fate of ophelia in the way that the pattern of being done wrong by men has been broken? like maybe it’s not meant to represent so much of hamlet but just that one bit? i’ve never read hamlet so that might make zero sense, but what are your thoughts lol
