Would it be weird for me to choose the name Matteo even though I’m not Italian?

I'm Italian on my mom's side but my birth name was American. I ended up choosing an Italian name when I transitioned. I don't think it's weird at all :)

Yeah but the issue is I’m not even Italian in heritage😭. My birth name is German & I quite like it aside from how feminine it sounds, but there’s no direct masculine alternative to it, nor are there any similar sounding German names I like. Matteo was the closest I could find out of all other similar sounding names that I actually liked, but I realized people would probably assume I was Italian based on the name and then might be weirded out when I explain I’m not, I just like it so I chose it

Also I am German by heritage, my dad and all of his family is German and Swiss and a lot of my mom’s side is German so I’d love to be able to choose a German one, but as I said non of the ones I could find felt quite right :(

that's totally fine though! I've met a lot of cis Americans who are given Italian or French names because "they sound pretty". I'm sorry you can't find a fitting name from your heritage though :( I can get where the dissonance is coming from

That’s a fair point, thanks for the input
