And by “being in choir helped me do this” I do mean the lessons I learned from it that I could then apply outside of singing. In particular, raising my soft palette to give my voice a darker tone in addition to being able to hit some lower pitches and breathing with fully supported breaths, fully utilizing my diaphragm and helping me through times where breathing is more difficult
Very similar experience for me. I grew up closeted in a hyper-religious school and sang soprano in church choir, but when I switched to public school in 11th grade, my choir teacher (incredible woman, super trans-affirming) as well as the wonderful students in the tenor section taught me how to rebuild my vocal range from the ground up! I still use a lot of the vocal/breathing techniques I learned there in day-to-day life to ‘pass’ better, and to calm down when I’m having a panic attack!
