I’m so apprehensive to start E because I feel like I’m past the point where my body would have significant changes due to my age and I’d need to pass for me to be happy

definitely not true lol. r/transtimelines and r/translater can help build perspective. it’s hard to understand how much hormones can change since most of us don’t have access to an IRL community and can’t watch these changes occur in others.

It is your body and your choice, and you know yourself best, so perhaps you are correct that you would need to pass in order to be happy. I will say that: while the effects of HRT indeed are not as significant if you start later, there are many trans women who successfully transition at 30+ years old (I agree with the other commenter to check out r/transtimelines).

So I was/am in a similar spot to you. I need to pass to be happy, but happiness isn't everything. At the very least even though I will never get to pass, my dysphoria has somewhat gotten better due to hrt. It's not perfect, but it helps a lot.

I guess I just keep self doubting that my body would actually change if that makes sense?

it’s an understandable anxiety, but i promise, hormones work lol. for many people, even before physical changes occur, they experience mental relief. changes take time (years), i won’t lie about that, but they do occur and they are transformative.

Also, I will say that for me, going on hormones and having developing a more feminine face and body has vastly improved my mental health, even if I still don't pass most of the time. E allowed me to feel the joy of living for the first time. The optimal decision for when/if to start hormones depends on each person's social and societal situation, as well as their current level of dysphoria, which for me was very severe.

It is statically proven that HRT improves the mental health of trans people by a significant amount. But it is not a panacea, and obviously sometimes it can create interpersonal problems due to transphobia, so make whatever choice you think will make you happiest overall. I encourage you to really consider the option, though.

If you ever think you'll want to start hormones in your life, the best time is asap. You'll be kicking yourself later if you wait (speaking from experience). If you instead decide that this isn't the right path for you, then that is totally fine and I hope best for you <3

Also a lot of ignorance in the comments towards passing. Passing isn't possible for everyone. It's insulting how people point to trans timelines to say that everyone can pass because it implies that me not passing is a failure on me.

everyone can pass but it takes time and effort and money, which a lot of people can’t front. it’s not like it’s your fault you have those circumstances, but it’s not like it’s impossible. the narrative that some people “just can’t pass” is incredibly discouraging for those questioning btw.

I've put in money, time, and effort. Thousands of dollars, hundreds of hours, and I've dedicated my life to this. Some people just can't pass. I've looked into every option. Also I'm literally advocating for op to get on hrt. I'm just not lying to her.
