i could be wrong—as in maybe there’s implications which have been so deeply ingrained at the cultural level that this doesn’t make much difference? i’m white myself so i don’t wanna talk over you as if i know everything—but I think it’s worth mentioning that antiracist class-affiliation groups like Redneck Revolt argue the term is more complicated than that
if there is a group of anti-racist rednecks they need a better PR team. or a new term would suffice. trying to pivot a terrorizing group does not seem like the best move, but i am also Black and my history with that is not positive. to reiterate: saying you are country or rural is not a bad thing. the term “redneck” seems like you are flagging something to other white people. if you are country, i don’t see why you wouldn’t just say that. flagging as a redneck feels harmful than helpful
