I’m visibly queer/GNC I’m traveling to the south (az) this week. Do I need to be cautious/careful about being too idk like?? Gay?? Do I need to tone down the gay?? I’ve never been this far down south and have absolutely no idea what I’m getting into.

Arizona is only “the South” geographically, culturally it is part of the Western US

I think az would be fine. If it was like the south east that could be diff

as someone from the southeast (the south) our rules are generally to yes, dress down. i get barked at at bus stops (college town, ymmv) bc people perceive me as a girl, and my friend got the gay slur yelled at him. it's generally a heightened scrutiny environment, although it's more social pressure than direct confrontation, at least where i am. so yeah, i'd probably dress down. emo teen whose parents don't let them wear a lot of makeup is the farthest i'd go in expression.

arizona should be fine. the south that you need to worry about is south of dc and east of san antonio

i live in az. it kinda depends on where you're going in az, there are definitely some places you might wanna tone it down just a bit but if you're gonna be in any of the bigger towns most people dgaf

I went to az in 2022 when I was 15 and had split dyed purple and green hair and no one said anything to me about it. Idk if it’s changed tho
