“transsexual” has two main uses/contexts: the first is its usage in past years instead of “transgender.” some older people still identify with the term because of that the second usage is more common for people our age. being “transsexual” means transitioning from one sex to another, and some medically transitioning trans people identify that way to honor that part of them. in some spaces, though, it’s used in a gatekeeping/purity way to invalidate those who only socially transition

in 99.99% of cases, when someone says “trans” they mean transgender but i think it’s important to point out that trans/trans* actually developed as an umbrella term to include multiple labels/experiences (transgender, transsexual, transvestite etc)

I personally use transsexual and not transgender as I feel that it’s much more accurate to my experience. It’s not my gender that I’m transitioning — that never changed. I’m transitioning my sex characteristics because there is a discrepancy between my brain/gender and body.
