The word “bioidentical” hormones came across my reading randomly, and I assumed based on the structure I knew what it meant, which it does mean hormones identical to the ones present in the body, but testosterone is naturally occurring in all people (1/2)

Everyone has some level of testosterone, estrogen, and progesterone. Bioidentical could be referring to hormone medications versus the in-house made stuff

So by that definition, HRT would just be BHRT. Weird.

Ps. it’s just interesting to me that we have different words for such similar things, and in a way it sort of makes me feel less dysphoric? Like yeah, literally cis men take T too, but just that extra bit of knowledge was kinda cool to learn

I once had a friend who described it as a chromosomal incompatibility and I was like 🤓 yes actually you are absolutely correct /gen

The reason people distinguish is because HRT back in the day was not bioidentical! Estrogen was from horses(?) (and idk what they did for testosterone) and caused a bunch of other side effects because it wasn't bioidentical to human hormones. That’s why a lot of older regulations try to keep people at such low max dosages - non-bioidentical hrt is way more dangerous, so you can have less of it before it fks you up. We haven't found similar issues with bioidentical hormones, so we can take more

That’s what I thought, that’s why I went to look it up, and it’s technically both, but does refer to endogenous hormones from what I’m primarily reading

It's to contrast from synthetic hormones which were more common decades ago
