Just found out that my insurance needs a letter of support from a mental health provider (so I can’t use my hrt provider)- will therapists and / or psychiatrists meet with you once or twice before writing a letter or do you have to be a regular patient?

Some groups have their own gender care specialists that meet you once and write a letter. I spent $150 getting a letter from Folx, but you should be able to get a letter on the first appointment from any mental health professional

Yes I got mine from my first session! I was very upfront about my intentions of solely getting the letter. I have a therapist that I meet with regularly but she’s based in the UK so she didn’t meet the reqs for my insurance

I got mine during the second session with my psychologist— started off very bluntly with him (and was recommended him by a friend who got their letter for top surgery from him). I still meet with him now, some three/four years after!

There was an online group of providers that would provide letters ASAP. Don’t know if you’ve tried searching around yet. If I can find the link, I’ll circle back to post

it depends on the provider, honestly. i recommend being very straight up with them and saying you're coming in looking for a letter of support. some insurances/hospital teams require you to have an existing relationship with the provider, while others are fine with you meeting with them just for the consultation. it may help to pitch it as an official signature on your mental state (good enough to make this decision) and saying essentially "yes, i testify that _____ told me that they experience

dysphoria and would best alleviate it with _____." your hospital may have example letters (not common, im sure, but wouldn't hurt to ask) which a provider unfamiliar with writing support letters would probably find helpful. lord knows mine did. hate that we have to go through all these hoops, but also, happy for you op! congratulations on taking your next steps!

Thanks for the info! It’s super annoying hoops to jump through but I’m still wicked excited 🕺🕺
