I just learned the ASL sign for transgender is the same as the sign for beautiful but instead of the hand next to your face it’s next to your heart because our hearts are beautiful and that fills me with so much joy

For the person whose comment was deleted: it’s more likely that you just haven’t learned the sign. It’s also a newer sign so it may not have traveled to you yet. Traditionally it is fingerspelled, but this is a shorthand for it. Just as there are regional dialects in spoken English (pop vs soda) there are regional dialects in ASL, so it could also be that your region just doesn’t use it! I can list several sources if you’re still interested. What’s the sign you learned for trans?

https://youtu.be/S10Som3v91A It’s talked about a little here. Well over a decade old, and from a Trans woman from Spain who spent a LOT of time travelling and meeting Trans folks. Relating to the internal identity— one that nobody can change, one that is not dependent on any hormonal or physical change (but can include). It has gained prominence internationally as well.

more information for others who are curious: it can be the sign for beautiful next to the chest, finger spelt, or a blending of several signs: beautiful, inside, heart, and change

Other signs would be deemed incorrect and insensitive. If you see someone who says it should be signed opening out like “express”, no, no, no. That sign came from a cis person. We have our sign, from the Deaf Trans community.

And by “over a decade ago”— closer to early 2000s, so… more than 20 years ago.

Yeah! Sorry the screenshot is so… fuzzy? I tried to use my Notes app and get a “full page” screenshot and had to crop a crop preview for it to work. 😭
