Should I stop putting my preferred names on applications to get jobs? Is that why I can’t get one

Unfortunately the job market sucks. A lot of job postings are fake or filtered through by bots and very few people get through. Your preferred name could have effect or could not. If you’re gonna be out at work keep it in there :)

If a job application has a “preferred name” option, nine times out of ten it’s to trick trans people into outting themselves. And employers do not like hiring trans people bc transphobia

Personally I stopped doing so just bc even if you don’t fill out a preferred name section, when they do your background check they’ll see your legal name and details, also when setting up payment and bank details legal details just follow us. It’s a hard brunt to take but might just be the move in this market
