I knew something not quite right had happened but it took a long time for me to understand it was rape because i really thought it was my fault for "not communicating well enough" and that it was an equal blame situation instead of what had actually happened. like I grew up always assuming responsibility for everyone else's emotions so for a very long time when bad things happened to me I was just like oh I mislead them or I shouldn't have smiled at them, it's my fault this happened
also for this specific situation it wasn't violent, it happened while I was asleep with a random hookup. not to mention I was only 18 and he was 40. so it took a really long time to sort through this mentally and come to terms with the fact that I didn't deserve it and that this was in no way my fault
When I got home I cried immediately and knew what happened but then my abuser lovebombed/gaslit and I was like ok maybe he did like me and im just crazy. His best friend reached out to me a week later and was like hey ik what happened he’s horrible im sorry. It took talking to that guy (a lot) for me to feel safe enough to process it. I knew what happened, but my brain literally wouldn’t let me think about it. I would start having a panic attack and dissociate from my thoughts. I had to (1/2)
I had to deliberately fight through that part of me that blocked it out… all of my mutual friends w/ my rpist that knew what happened didnt do anything and even the guy who had contacted me about it wouldnt stick up for me.. , they all wanted to stay “neutral”. A couple months later I got a recording of rpist admitting what happened and when I posted that everywhere that finally made ppl take me seriously, even though they all knew.::
But it took me months to feel brave enough on my own to get to that point. even with people being like hey ik what happened bc I was being mentally abused and also socially I was not being openly supported, everyone deferred to my rpist .. and even after the first couple of people who knew told me they believed me, it was still hard for me to basically be like omg that happened to ME im a real person (bc dissociation). So sleep deprived forgive the structure of this pls
Dissociation is something that a lot of people experience during the assault and afterwards. It is common with all types of ptsd/traumatic events. It might be easier for you to think about ex. how PTSD works with veterans: where they’re a lot of times “okay” (though they know that they’re traumatized) until they get home and “decompress”, at that point then all of a sudden they’re having outbursts etc ..
It is really hard to go to the police about these kinds of things for a lot of reasons that I dont have time to explain but fr you can and should google that, like why people have a hard time with going to the police after being rped. There will be explanations there . And sometimes (a lot of times) people dont have anyone they can tell. It takes 24 years on avg for victims of SA to tell another person what happened
