Why not both? Those two quotes sound like the same thing. “History is watching” doesn’t mean the past is watching, it means what kind of future are we making and how will the future history books talk about us.

It’s very passive though. It makes it sound as though the history books will just be written in some morally correct way at the end of the day and all will be restored through sheer karma. All of history has been written in blood.
