I am an atheist to preface so assume no bias. Hot take : Protestant Reformation is the most detrimental historical event to humanity EVER! By extension Martin Luther is the most influential person of all time and Protestant thought has th most consequence

I’m also an atheist but why the Protestant reformation? That feels like such a weird thing to zero in on. And the reformation enabled the Age of Enlightenment which brought a lot of good social and scientific progress.

It didn’t it brought about freedom. WHICH IS GOOD IN MODERATION. We have sense exceeded that amount of moderation which has led to moral erosion. At first Protestantism was wonderful up until this century. It allowed for constrained freedom without the rigidity of Catholicism, but now it has completely provided people with the authority to make their own moral claims

2) This has significant implications for society at large. We do not agree on a moral truth any longer this causes anarchy, confusion, and at an individual level there can be no community. With Catholicism there was no question of personal morality, early Protestantism was the same, but that freedom Protestantism provided was also the freedom for people to turn away from the western moral structure forming their own irrational and destructive views

This is just what conservative Protestants say about atheism except it’s being said about Protestantism

Def agree with that seems incompatible. You’d have to hear my full argument out and I doubt you wish to. I acknowledge I am personally apart of the issue if that clarifies anything lol
