This is how I know it ain’t about fairness in sports because how the hell is gender relevant in the slightest to chessWomen only titles and competitions exist to encourage women to play the game. Historically speaking, women haven’t been allowed to participate in top competitions, as their rating was lower. This is partially due to top chess schools only allowing boys. While many women have made it to the top, none have surpassed the likes of magnus, Fischer, or Kasparov. Feel free to look at a bell curve of chess ratings amongst men and women. This is why the differentiation exists. Simply put, women have not
I understand that historically speaking there’s been obstacles against women competing that have morphed over time into an underlying air of misogyny in the sport, but I fail to see why that means a teen identifying as a woman who would therefore not behave misogynistic, in a day and age where gender exclusive chess training is almost entirely nonexistent, is an issue, unless you’re in the camp where you feel trans women aren’t women but that’s another issue entirely.
Basically, I feel like weaponizing historical barriers in chess, most of which have been eradicated in the modern age, and still prevalent misogynistic attitudes against an individual like this isn’t doing anything to help change that whatsoever. There’s no inherent advantage to being biologically male in chess and this person isn’t trying to force masculine misogyny into women’s spaces designed against specifically that, so I fail to see the issue.
Regardless of how someone identifies, sex-based differences still exist. Males, on average, perform better in areas like spatial reasoning, which is relevant in chess. That’s part of why we have women’s divisions, as they offer opportunities to biological females who’ve historically faced barriers and typically rank lower due to both social and cognitive factors. Open tournaments are inclusive, but women’s divisions are meant to uplift females
