If this is “gift to reduce the public debt” those go into the general fund for that year’s budget, not to paying down the existing debt. At best it slows down adding to the debt. At worst, politicians see it as additional revenue and spend a correspondingly additional amount

I mean…the idea itself to accept donations is a great idea. However, if debt is one of the number one concerns, they shouldn’t be passing large government spending bills with tax cuts.
