Ok but tbf, I was in elementary school when the food shift happened. We used to get chocolate cake once a week. We had the GOOD pizza. We got jello and whipped cream on Fridays. All of that was stolen from me. From all of us. In return we got hockey pucks they labeled as “whole wheat dinner rolls” as consolation prizes. I will never forgive Michelle for this crime against school lunches.

Not saying the pure protein or horse pills are genius, but that the healthy school lunch thing was flawed. Students already hate school. We should make lunch something ENJOYABLE, not clinically proven for maximum nutrients.

Ah yes, a regular dinner roll or a tiny piece of desert to make my crappy school a tiny bit tolerable is equal to a life of eating Doritos and drinking Mountain Dew.

Her plan was absolutely flawed. In fact it was so watered down that the government even cut deals with Coca Cola to get it passed. That’s why Coke vending machines started popping up in so many schools. But what is crazy is the vilification of a woman by other adults as an evil un-American communist witch because she tried. And now RFK is coming in with his alternative “science” and “facts” and the same people are all for it.

It was never about making America healthy it was always about dogging on a black woman for her efforts while going feral for these right wing lunatics

Oh no, I don’t like RFK. I think he is mentally insane. I’ve voted blue each chance I’ve gotten. But I’m also a teacher. My students hate being in school. They’d rather be literally anywhere else and could not care less about being here. I remember feeling the same way. Having that slice of chocolate cake for lunch, or that one meal a week where the cafeteria staff can go all out to look forward to brightens the day.

My mom taught at the middle school I attended. She told me stories about how the cafeteria manager, pre new regulations, would spend the week home-making muffins, and serve them for breakfast on Friday. Everyone loved them, and her. She made school food GOOD. Then, the regulations came along. Tied her hands so tightly that she had to switch to the approved bland, cardboard, or disgusting options that preserve the grant funding. Suddenly, the students hated their food.

I would actually argue that these efforts made young people LESS likely to eat healthy alternatives. If your only exposure to whole wheat breads is the cardboard dinner roll? You’re going to assume that that is the taste of all whole wheat, and never go back.
