Pinning this on progressives skips the evidence. Scores started sliding around 2013, before the book-ban wave, and they fell nationwide. The bigger culprits are years of curricula that skipped phonics, pandemic disruption, and underfunded schools. "Just expect more" doesn't teach a kid to decode. And pulling challenging books off shelves isn't raising standards either.
The slide is real. It's the diagnosis I'm questioning. Phones and chronic absence are signs of kids who are disengaged, not proof that teachers went soft. Raising the bar without fixing how reading is taught, class sizes, and what's actually allowed on shelves just fails more kids faster. Higher standards only help if kids get the tools to meet them.
