Daycares are a recent western invention because of capitalism, in other countries children of parents who work are taken care of by grandparents, aunts, uncles, relatives, close friends, elders in the community etc… this forms a strong society

People literally still do that. Daycare is not just about looking after kids, it’s activity based, and it’s a way to get them socialized with other kids their age

yeah ngl I wouldn’t want my kids to drink until college and vape NEVER and there’s some people I just wouldn’t trust to not discourage them from that stuff

it’s basically just everyone who’s involved as if they’re blood related but aren’t (like the close friends but can be even broader)

oh I looked it up yeah most immigrant communities have that with them calling adult family friends uncle and aunty. “Fictive kin” is way too academic jargon tho😭 science communication people

In science communication we’re taught to not use jargon and explain the concepts we study in the regular language that people speak on the daily. Or else people think of academics as these people with their heads in the clouds doing theoreticals instead of living in the real world and that lessens trust in science. It’s a huge issue in climate science and sociology specifically

very valid, i kind of switch back and forth? like i want to be understandable but also id like to disseminate the info on how to better understand the jargon ya know? so academic language isn’t as opaque for those who do want to look into it but aren’t part of the field or in academia at all
