Yeah man it just isn’t really my place to be criticizing the Quran or the Torah. I can make my criticisms of religion through the one I feel closer to. Also 99% of the time someone white is criticizing Islam it just probably isn’t in good faith. It’s usually racist or bigoted in some way. Also Christianity isn’t like an oppressed religion in modern times like literally every other major religion is in the western world. What are we fucking doing here.
But like if we wanna go down the list there’s tons of shit to criticize about non-Christian religions. Tibetan Buddhism selects random kids that are incarnations of different holy figures and those kids just can’t have a normal life. Hinduism has the caste system that’s an easy one. Islam has a lot of the same fundamental problems as Christianity but hasn’t liberalized to the same degree. Orthodox Judaism has a ton of awful rules and is misogynistic.
Zoroastrianism limits the priesthood only to people from specific lineages and strictly discourages marrying outside the religion. The same goes for Samaritanism and Mandaeism. Many Native American religions included brutal torture rituals like the Okipa on the Great Plains. And groups like the Natchez in the Mississippian culture had human sacrifice, similar to the Aztecs.
Many west African traditional religions include hazing rituals into secret societies, are very misogynistic, and some mandated untouchable castes or the killing of twins. Hawaiian traditional religion was also very misogynistic, and that’s part of why king Kamehameha II brought Christianity to Hawaii.
You didn’t argue anything. Your criticism of Orthodox Judaism is “has a ton of awful rules and is misogynistic” and Islam was “has the same fundamental problems as Christianity”. These are some of the most general, meaningless statements. It’s not even worthy of a response honestly. You provided more specific detail on west African religion which literally have no affect on western politics, which makes me think you used AI to write that 🤣
My primary criticism of Christianity would also be “has a ton of awful rules and is misogynistic.” I can list the problems of Islam more deeply. Holy wars, suppression of minority religions, misogyny, homophobia, transphobia, iconoclasm, religious justifications of slavery, systemic violence against apostates.
It sounds like you just want to look down on hypothetical leftists instead of acknowledging that you can be against the problems of minority religions and also oppose the racially motivated bigotry of conservatives. I know about those aspects of west African religions because I took an Africana studies class. I recommend the book Things Fall Apart. Very informative on pre-colonial west African society and the British missionization process.
We can go more deeply in the rules of Orthodox Judaism which suck. These problems are less prominent in more moderate Jewish denominations, but still exist to varying degrees. Discouragement of exogamous marriages. Mistreatment of women who have been sexually assaulted. Homophobia, transphobia, misogyny. Cohenim can’t marry converts. A bunch of rules on what you can and can’t wear, not trimming beards, what you can and can’t eat, what you can and can’t do. Stuff that just makes life harder.
Orthodox yeshivas just suck all around and especially in the United States with Haredim are used as a tool to isolate children into religious fundamentalist communities. Limited literacy, little math education, limited English knowledge. The Haredim are basically like Jewish Amish. Brutally isolationist which is extremely harmful to kids. I consider that at least cult-adjacent, and some haredi groups are absolutely just cults.
Well, there we have it! The real reason why you can’t criticize non-Christians “…also oppose the racially motivated bigotry of conservatives”. So it’s not an issue of religion, but of race. Western atheists, who are mostly leftists, will associate Christianity with whites and then any other religion with browns. To leftists, any criticism of browns is taboo, so now i understand why you can’t be critical of other religions. It’s against the new age fundamental race politics for leftists
I feel like you’re being dense on purpose. Conservative Christians try to treat Muslims like they are all evil and dangerous. They fearmonger about them constantly, even though a lot of the problems of Islam are also features of conservative Christianity. Criticizing Islam is different from the people going “Mamdani is going to jihad New York City.” But because so much bigotry against Muslim people is couched as criticizing Islam, one has to be methodical and precise in criticizing Islam.
You clearly don’t actually care about criticizing other religions, or about what leftists actually think, or about why Christianity is focused upon. You just want a strawman you can use to look down upon others and treat their opinions as automatically invalid, lest you might actually have to consider their positions for their merits. And if you consider their positions, you might find some truth in them, and cognitive dissonance is scary.
Im active in multiple atheist communities and regularly keep up with events and happenings within the organized atheist space. I explained to you why Christianity is focused upon. It’s the dominant religion within our culture, and Islam is often criticized in incorrect ways by conservatives to justify bigotry. So criticism of Islam has to be methodical so as to not further bigotry and fearmongering.
