This is what I think of when people say not to judge people in the past for what they did because “it was a different time” because people in their time were still able to recognize when things were fucked up even if it didn’t harm them.

Muslim guy once said “All women’s rights are granted to them through men. If you can’t enforce your own rights and men need to do it, they are an illusion.” (Paraphrasing) To which I responded: ☝️🤔…

Someone accused you of hating sex workers idk

Oh gotcha, it’s that one weird person who will randomly say that bc I think the purchasing of prostitution should be illegal but the selling yourself shouldn’t be so that sex workers can go to the police and actually receive help. It’s more effective statistically but dude thinks I’m crazy.

Oh absolutely! I am mainly talking about leaders who actively knew about issues and chose to do nothing but we still praise as heroes of their time. People who just follow the flow of traffic without looking into things themselves have always existed

She actually purposefully moved and went to a black school in Mississippi bc (I don’t remember her actual words) basically she saw that there wasn’t really a movement there compared to other places and she wanted to help start one

This isn’t black and white. Times changing has a lot to do with how people think and act. That should already be apparent when we compare now vs then.

It’s definitely not black and white but I also don’t believe people just get off the hook for atrocious actions just because of the culture they lived in. Like slaves being common in a culture doesn’t validate people who chose to own and abuse people. There are things people can realize even within a toxic culture if they have empathy.

I just am tired of people glorifying people in history who might have helped one thing but did awful things in another. I also grew up in a far right family where they idolize historical figures and ignore their atrocities so I have a fair bit of resentment towards the glorified people in history.

Well no not necessarily excuse people of their actions but it should be considered when we interact with other people. However you grew up has a huge impact on your behavior later in life, no matter where or when. Times are constantly changing and society has grown more accepting or less accepting of things. People need to follow along when things change but it’s sometimes hard to break out of something that you’ve had present for a good part of your life

What on earth does that have to do with the civil rights movement? That’s about racial segregation, not the suffrage movement.

The question posed was “why would a woman want civil rights?”

Close it’s “why would a WHITE woman want civil rights [for people of color]?” That’s literally the point

She was protesting for desegregation and the civil rights movement WHICH IS ABOUT POC

The civil rights movement was about desegregation and civil rights for people of color. The suffrage movement was for voting rights and things for women

The entire civil rights movement wasn’t just about rights for POC, it established leadership and was utilized to stir tension through attempted controlled opposition. When MLK and Malcom X broke conditioning, they were assassinated. Allegedly. I wasn’t there. Just studying the reports.

What are you even on about 💀 the civil rights movement was for desegregation and discrimination, of course they were assassinated and no one is arguing they weren’t and the government plan during the time does not equate to the movement of civil rights itself. And yet still none of that is about women’s rights and the suffrage movement.

Stop yapping about random things and just admit your mistake and move on.

The point is obviously not about the nitty gritty of everything that happened in the civil rights movement but it is still separate from the suffrage movement, hence why they have different names.

Suffrage was likely established to double the tax base and get women working for businesses rather than their own families in their most fertile years. Take on college debt and spend the rest of their lives paying it off. A slow plan, because the bill comes due with the next generation of women having to outwork the previous. Disastrous consequences. It’s entirely possible nobodies vote has really counted since… ever? Maybe until recently? Difficult to calculate.
