I get it’s hard to NOT believe I’m trying to defend Dems any chance I get, but I will defend most descriptive statements. In politics, yes, optics and rhetoric obviously matter, but if a Republican or a Leftist said this, I would also say it’s true BUT the quality of the statement matters just as much. I can almost guarantee Clinton said something along the lines of helping build countries up or getting rid of certain elements like dictators, etc in order to help other nations

context matters, and the fact that she said this after our government launched a campaign of ethnic cleansing against our own population is extremely telling.

I’d probably get into the meat of the statement a bit more, because I understand the leftist perspective of imperialism and other examples they’d give of American fuck-ups, but I firmly believe in some, not all, neoliberal principles as opposed to isolationism and just “leaving them alone”. Nation-building is a cornerstone of one of my beliefs.

And sure, that’s why I said optics do matter. I hate that it does because I’ve always seen optics as pearl-clutching, but the reality of the situation is people do care about that shit. I don’t think it’s her being tone deaf either. Remember, Obama deported a lot of people and so did Bush. Immigration has always been an issue that has overlapped administrations, including the one she was involved in.

Yes, we can argue and debate the facts and history of those admins involvement regarding immigration reform, but is anyone really expecting Hillary Clinton to come out and say “Abolish ICE” or “Open borders now”?
